Day 37,

The tribe uses what appears to be gourd bowls for a variety of things, such as facial paint and broth, when they cannot eat something solid with their mouths and hands. I am considering fashioning utensils out of wood and showing them how to do it properly. They actually slurp when they drink! I am not sure what this is they have given me, but it looks like raw chunks of meat in a thick liquid that I have yet to identify. It smells musty.

The men, women, and children have feathers hanging in their hair and off necklaces of beads and animal teeth (although some of these look too human for my liking). I asked why this was, and the response was a hand slicing the air with a long exhale of breath. I think they believe these feathers will actually make them move faster.
While they wear much in jewelry, embarrassingly few wear as much as even a savage's loincloth.

Sketch of a tavaki warrior
The one I have dubbed Reginald (for he reminds me of my wife's father) did not like me looking at him, and did not notice or care that I was trying to sketch him. I had to draw only when he was looking away.

The broth made me vomit. The others laughed when I did. I suspect humans were not meant to eat meat raw.
